Five people killed floods, landslides in central Philippines

Five people killed floods, landslides in central Philippines Manila  - Five people were killed in floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains in the central Philippines on the weekend, authorities said Monday.

Three people drowned in floods in Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental province, 645 kilometres south of Manila, according to provincial Governor Emilio Macias II.

Macias said two children were also reported killed in a landslide in nearby Valencia town.

He said the heavy rains caused rivers and creeks to overflow on Saturday, triggering floods that washed away an undetermined number of houses and placed a huge part of Dumaguete under water.

The weather bureau warned of more rains in the central and western Philippines after a low pressure area was spotted southwest of the country's west coast. (dpa)
