Manila  - Eight people were killed Monday when two passenger buses collided along a highway in a city south-east of the Philippine capital, a police report said.

It said 41 people were also injured in the accident that occurred before dawn in Lucena City, 105 kilometres from Manila.

Three of the injured passengers were in critical condition and being treated at the Quezon Medical Centre in Lucena.

Investigators were still determining the cause of the accident. The drivers of both buses have been placed under police custody. (dpa)
