New Delhi/ Patna/ Ranchi: The Congress Party on Monday asked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to tender apologies for the Babri mosque demolition and communal statements made by its leaders.

Reacting to BJP leader L K Advani''s demand for an apology from Congress President Sonia Gandhi for her critical remarks on the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said, "Advani should begin by seeking an apology for Babri; he has to seek an apology for keeping quiet during Varun Gandhi''s reprehensive divisive speech, Praveen Togadia, Vinay Katyals and Narendra Modi have to seek apology."

Commenting on the controversial statement of All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary in charge of the Goa desk, B K Hariprasad, Singhvi said, "This word (sorry) applies only to the BJP. Hari Prasad has only applied Narendra Modi''s sentence to himself and his leaders. Unless Modi apologises and withdraws, he should apply that statement for Advani also."

Hariprasad had recently said that BJP should dump former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Advani into the Arabian Sea.

Expressing regret over the statements, BJP President Rajnath Singh told reporters in Patna, "I expect the Congress party to condemn the statement made by its General Secretary and it should see that such comments are not made in future by its leaders."

Meanwhile, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi ridiculed the Congress by saying that allies of the Congress party are contesting elections on their own despite being a part of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA).

He claimed that such trends are an indication of loosing strength of the ruling Congress-led UPA.

"A new thing seen in these elections is that allies who are there with the Congress party, on one hand they say that they are with the Congress but then they fight elections on their own. The fate of these parties will not be different from that of Congress party and electorate will not give their mandate to these parties," opined Narendra Modi while addressing an election rally in Ranchi.
