BMW surpasses Porsche and Audi as EV sales surge in Q2 2024
In the dynamic landscape of electric vehicle (EV) market, German luxury car brand BMW surged past competitors like Porsche, Audi and Mercedes-Benz with a remarkable increase in electric car sales in the second quarter (Q2) of 2024. BMW outshined the aforementioned luxury rivals despite a challenging environment, thanks to its strategic focus on innovative electric mobility technology that has started paying off, fortifying its leadership position in the luxury EV segment.
Many among the luxury automakers, including Porsche and Audi, kept struggling this year. BMW managed to strengthen its position by garnering 22 per cent more EV sales in the April through June quarter. BMW Group delivered roughly 108,000 EVs in Q2, and 190,622 so far this year. The group’s year-to-date EV sales figure represents a growth of 24.6 per cent year-over-year.
In the BMW Group, the BMW brand led the charge as its EV sales jumped 34 per cent in the first half (H1) of this year. Through the H1, the BMW brand delivered a total of 179,557 fully-electric vehicles. Overall, the luxury brand’s sales grew 2.3 per cent in the first six months.
On the other hand, rivals kept struggling. Porsche’s electric car sales slipped as deliveries of the Taycan EV fell 51 per cent in the first half (H1) of 2024. The decline was noted as the company introduced the updated 2025 Taycan and new Macan Electric.
Likewise, luxury brand Mercedes-Benz reported a decline of 25 per cent in its EV sales, with merely 45,800 units delivered to customers during the April through June quarter of this year. Audi’s electric car sales remained nearly flat in the past quarter.
Meanwhile, VW is considering plans to close its Brussels-based manufacturing facility as demand for the Audi Q8 e-tron electric SUV and Sportback models declined in the past few quarters.
The impressive EV sales of BMW highlight its successful strategy and robust market position. With EV sales soaring by 22 per cent in past quarter and new models like the I4 and IX2 set to be launched later this year, BMW is poised to maintain its momentum in the future as well. The brand’s innovative approach and upcoming Neue Klasse EVs signal a promising future as the brand continues to lead the charge. It reaffirms the brand’s commitment to driving the transition from ICEs to electric powertrains.
