23 year old daughter of Billy Joel and , Alexa Ray Joel, was rushed to a hospital in Manhattan after she presumably downed a "handful" of sleeping pills in a failed suicide bid. After paramedics responded to a 911 call which came in around 12:30 pm, she was rushed to the St. Vincent's Medical Center. The call had been made form Alexa's apartment in West Village.

Medical officials were informed by the Fire Department officers that she had taken as many as 8 pills and was having trouble inhaling.

"She is stable", said Claire Mercuri, Alexa Ray's publicist, hours after she arrived at the hospital.

While Billy Joel preferred to stay at his Long Island home, Brinkley stepped into the hospital at about 4:20 pm, and Alexa was released a few hours later.

It has been reported that ever since Alexa broke up with her boyfriend former bandmate Jimmy Riot, a few years ago, she had been a "wreck" and seemed to be suffering from "depression". While investigations are on, it is not really clear why the attempt was made. Alexa has not shared any comments about the incident.
