Lima - European Commission President Jose Manuel Durao Barroso enjoyed Thursday an "extraordinary" experience in the ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, in Peru, on a visit ahead of the European Union-Latin America and the Caribbean summit on Friday and Saturday in Lima.

Barroso visited Machu Picchu - one of the so-called New Seven Wonders of the World - with his wife and a delegation of EU officials.

"I did not know anything like it," the Portuguese said in admiration.

On Wednesday Barroso visited Cusco, in south-eastern Peru, where he witnessed a traditional ceremony and dance. (dpa)
