Austria appoint Constantini to succeed Brueckner
Vienna - Austria Wednesday appointed Didi Constantini to succeed Karel Brueckner as coach of the national side.
Constantini, 53, will be assisted by Manfred Zsak who moves from the under-21 team. Former international Andreas Herzog will take over the under-21s, the Austrian football federation said.
Constantini, a much-travelled player and coach in Austria, had twice briefly been in charge of the national team in interim capacities in the early 1990s.
He will be officially presented on Thursday.
The Austrian federation had Monday severed its contract with 69-year-old Brueckner. The Czech coach had taken over the team last July after Austria's unsuccessful showing at the Euro 2008 championships.
The Austrians got off to a good start in World Cup qualifying Group 7 by beating France 3-1 but have since slipped to defeats to Lithuania and Serbia and drawn with the Faroe Islands.
Constantini's first task will be to get a positive result when Romania are the visitors at a qualifying game in Klagenfurt on April 1. (dpa)
