Anand finishes at tied third spot in GWRC

Viswanathan AnandWorld champion Viswanathan Anand has finished at the tied third position in the Grenkeleasing world rapid chess championship after he failed to give his best in the tournament at Mainz, Germany on Monday.

Anand was unable to claim the title for 12th time as he was eliminated in the prelims of the annual event earlier. Today, all the four games against German Arkadiz Naiditsch for the third place ended in draws and both were forced to share third spot.

Anand had started his campaign in the tournament on a negative note as he lost to Armenia's Levon Aronian in 41 moves and debutant Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi in 56 moves in the opening matches of the tournament.

Armenian Levon Aronian, former junior champion, has clinched his first ever title on Mainz soil after defeating Ian Nepomniatchchi of Russia in the final of the tournament. He won first two games quite easily and then won the match to lift the title.
