Normal life affected for second day in Kashmir Valley

One killed during protests in Indian Kashmir Srinagar, Sept 20 : In Kashmir Valley, normal life came to a standstill for the second consecutive day on Saturday following a shutdown call given by separatists.

According to official sources, business establishments, government and semi-government offices, banks and other financial institutions as well as educational institutions remained closed while traffic remained off the roads in various districts.

Traders in Kashmir valley boycott goods from Jammu

Srinagar, Sept 17 : Traders in Srinagar decide to boycott goods from Jammu in retaliation to the State''s winter capital shunning goods from Kashmir valley during the two-month long agitation over the Hindu shrine land row.

The boycott is supported by almost all the traders unions and the Chamber of Commerce of Kashmir as the traders felt they couldn''t negate the sentiments of the locals who have nursed a grudge against the traders of Jammu.

15 injured in Srinagar grenade blast

Srinagar, Sept 17 : At least 15 people were injured in a grenade blast at Badshah Chowk in Srinagar today.

Four security men, militant killed in clashes in Indian Kashmir

Srinagar, Kashmir - Four Indian security men and a suspected Muslim militant were killed Monday in gun battles across Indian- administered Kashmir, police said.

Army troops and police launched a joint operation at a militant hideout in a forested area in Surankote town, some 250 kilometres north-west of the state's capital Jammu.

"Four security personnel including two army soldiers and two from

the police's Special Operation Group were killed in the encounter," a local police official said.

"The security team has been fighting a group of three militants and the gun-battle is still on," he added.

Trooper killed amid fresh clashes in Indian Kashmir

Srinagar, Kashmir - Suspected Muslim militants on Saturday killed a trooper in Srinagar, capital of India-administered Kashmir where continuing clashes between separatist protestors and police left 30 wounded, officials said.

The trooper belonging to the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force was shot dead at point-blank range by unidentified militants in the Safa Kadal area, local police said.

The city also saw clashes between security forces and mobs angry over killings of two civilians in police firing at pro-independence rallies on Friday.

Police cane-charged stone-pelting protestors shouting anti-India slogans. Local officials estimated that at least 30 people were injured in three such clashes in the city.

Power self-sufficiency key to economic development: J-K governor

Srinagar, Sept 13 : The Government of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday called for self-reliance in power generation by optimum development of the hydel potential of the State as it would lead to overall economic development.

At 51st board meeting of the State Power Development Corporation in Srinagar, the Jammu and Kashmir Governor, N N Vohra, said, “Mini and micro hydel projects hold the key for meeting power requirements, particularly in remote areas.”

During the meeting, working of the Power Development Corporation was reviewed and the board members discussed various issues regarding power generation, transmission and maintenance according to reports.
