Nepal seeks to be a democratic federation

Kathmandu, Feb 5 : Senior leaders of the major political parties have agreed that Nepal should adopt a unique model of federalism that binds its people together.

During a programme organised by the Society for Constitutional and Parliamentary Exercise here on Wenesday, leaders of the Nepali Congress (NC), the CPN (UML), the Maoists and the Rastriya Janashakti Party (RJP) said that federalism and constitution should be appropriate to the society and geography of Nepal.

Nepalnews quoted Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala said national integrity and national unity should be the key factors of federalism and that it should touch the lives of people and bind them together.

Prominent Nepalese journalist arrested for terrorism links Kathmandu  - Police in Nepal Wednesday said they have arrested a prominent Nepalese journalist for suspected links to a terrorist organization.

Rishi Dhamala, who is also the president of the Nepal Reporters Club that brings together diplomats, politicians and journalists, was remanded to 14-day judicial custody by a court following his arrest.

Dhamala is accused of having links with Ranvir Sena, an armed group operating in southern Nepal, the police said.

Nepali Congress asks govt not to go ahead with ordinancesKathmandu, Feb 4 : Nepali Congress (NC) leaders have urged the government not to introduce any ordinances immediately.

A team of Nepali Congress leaders led by Vice President Ram Chandra Poudel met Prime Minister Prachnada here today and asked him to put on hold the ordinances that are in the pipeline.

They suggest that the bills be tabled in the House for endorsement instead of promulgating them through ordinance. They also said the party would resort to protests if their suggestions are ignored.

UNICEF again called upon the Government of Sri Lanka and the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) to give absolute priority to the safety of children and the wider civilian population.
