"Why?" students ask after German bloodbathWinnenden, Germany  - The small town of Winnenden in south-west Germany struggled to come to terms Thursday with the school bloodbath in its midst that left 16 dead.

"Why?" was the question most commonly asked by students as they paid tribute to the pupils, teachers and innocent bystanders gunned down by Tim Kretschmer, 17.

"What did you have against them?" read a message at one of the tables decorated with flowers and candles that schools in the vicinity set up for pupils to pay their respects.

The diary of the Jewish teenager, published as "The Secret Annex" in 1947, is one of the most famous documents recounting the Nazi persecution of the Jews during World War II.

To commemorate Anne Frank upcoming 80th birthday, the Dutch Anne Frank Foundation launched a national diary writing competition among Dutch elementary schools.

Pakistan troops kill 18 militants in tribal region Islamabad  - Helicopter gunships Thursday pounded militants hideouts in Pakistan's tribal region that borders Afghanistan, killing at least 18 rebels, said a security official.

"Several positions of the militants were destroyed in the action that took place in three areas," said an official of the Mohmand Rifles, the paramilitary force deployed in the area.

"At least 18 militants were killed and scores of others injured," added the official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Serbian soldiers get 20 years in prison for Vukovar massacre Belgrade  - A Serbian war crimes court on Thursday sentenced 13 former reservists in the ex Yugoslav army to between five and 20 years in prison for their involvement in war crimes committed in Croatia in 1991. Five other defendents were acquitted.

Former commander of Vukovar's Territorial defense Miroljub Vujovic and six other reservists were sentenced to maximum 20 years in prison for their involvement in killing of some 200 Croatian civilians at the Ovcara farm near Vukovar, eastern Croatia in November 1991.
