India's main opposition party announces poll manifesto

BJP's candidate Lal Krishna AdvaniNew Delhi  - India's main Hindu nationalist opposition party, in its election manifesto released Friday, asserted its commitment to rebuild a Hindu temple that has been the cause of deadly rioting and promised tough national security laws as well as measures to provide relief to the poor.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politicians led by Lal Krishna Advani, the party's prime ministerial candidate, unveiled the document in New Delhi on a day Hindus mark as "Ram Navmi," or the birth anniversary of the god Ram.

Advani claimed that the main battle was between the Congress and the BJP.

"There is no scope for a Third Front government, which does not have the support of the BJP or the Congress. It is a farcical illusion in the minds of people," he told reporters on the sidelines of party's manifesto-release function.

"The party has taken a correct stand under the law and in accordance with Constitution," Advani said.

He, however, advised the party candidates to show restraint in their speeches.

Advani demanded that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government disclose details of the accounts of Indians in Swiss and other foreign banks, estimated at between Rs. 25 lakh and Rs. 70 lakh crore.
