FDA issues warning regarding Pfizer's Chantix

It has been warned by the US Food and Drug Administration that Pfizer's anti-smoking drug, Chantix, leads to suicidal behavior and also causes other psychiatric side-effects. The agency issued the warning after it reviewed company findings, according to which the drug does not lead to such problems. The drug is reported to cause suicidal tendencies and aggressive or strange behavior among some patients.

On Monday, the FDA gave many updates about Chantix's labeling in which it also warned that the drug could also interact with alcohol. It has been reported by some patients that they experience bizarre or aggressive behavior, when they drink during the course of the drug.

Oxytocin Nasal Spray could help fight obesity: Study

A new study has found that a single dose of nasal spray consisting synthetic Oxytocin can reduce calories and fatty foods consumption among healthy weight and overweight men. Oxytocin is an important hormone that plays its part during several activities and is used to induce labor as well.

Elizabeth Lawson, MD, MMSc, assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, Boston, and lead investigator, said, “Our results are really exciting. Further study is needed, but I think oxytocin is a promising treatment for obesity and its metabolic complications”.

For the study, the investigators conducted tests on 25 participants, men aging around 27 in average. Out of them, 13 were fit while the rest of the 12 were either obese or overweight.

New Study offers Insight into Health Benefits of Different Types of Plant-based Diets

Plant-based diet, including seafood and fish may reduce the risk of colorectal cancers, finds a US study. The study published in JAMA Internal Medicine provides new insight into health benefits of different types of plant-based diets.

Study’s lead researcher Dr. Michael Orlich, an assistant professor in medicine and public health at Loma Linda University in California, said, “We were surprised to find that pescovegetarians had a significantly lower risk of colorectal cancers than people on other vegetarian diets”.

As per researchers, pescovegetarians are those who eat fish at least once a month and meat less than once a month.

Wildlife Officials rescue Endangered Leatherback Sea Turtle

Earlier, wildlife officials rescued an endangered 500-pound leatherback sea turtle from a remote beach. Now, the officials at a South Carolina aquarium have been treating the largest of all living turtles.

While giving information about the turtle, Jenna Cormany, a wildlife biologist with the state’s Department of Natural Resources, said that the rescued reptile is the first living leatherback turtle that has been recovered in South Carolina.

Scientists trace Origins of 17th Century African Slaves

About three centuries ago, three Africans had died in slavery on the Caribbean island of Saint Martin. Now, scientists have traced them back to their homelands. According to reports, the scientists analyzed snippets of DNA that were recovered from the roots of the three Africans’ teeth.

The scientists had conducted a study to understand the complex history of slavery. The study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that out of the three Africans, one man possibly belonged to a Bantu-speaking group in northern Cameroon, while the other two would have belonged to non-Bantu-speaking groups in present-day Nigeria and Ghana. Out of the three individuals, two were men, while one was a woman.

Mars rover Curiosity likely to resume operations

Earlier, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) had reported short circuit in its Mars rover 'Curiosity' robotic arm. Now, the united space agency said that it is expected to resume operations invoking the use of its robotic arm next week.

It has been informed that the robotic arm of rover was automatically disabled when a short-circuit was detected on February 27. The problem happened at the time it was conducting an early step in the transfer of rock powder that gathered by the drill on the arm to laboratory instruments inside the rover.
