GM to repurchase $5 billion shares to resolve proxy fight

Automotive giant General Motors will purchase $5 billion shares stock and will be returning cash worth $20 billion to shareholders over the next few years. GM took this step in order to resolve dispute with investors and it also approved a plan in an attempt to boost its share price that has remained unchanged for some time.

Ban on Nicotine in E-Cigarette Products draws Criticism

A visiting health professional is criticizing a ban on nicotine in e-cigarette products. University of Queensland professor Wayne Hall is going to join experts who are calling to remove the ban.

It’s against law to sell electronic nicotine refills but it can be lawfully acquired from overseas suppliers for personal use. According to Hall, an absurd situation has been created by law and people were resorting to the black market to purchase products that have a less harmful form of nicotine compared to normal tobacco cigarettes.

"You can buy cigarettes wherever you like but you're not allowed to buy something that's probably a great deal safer, at least in the short term”, said Hall.

New device could replace animal testing

Drug testing could become faster and safer because of a new device, which could replace animal testing. The device consists of a small piece of cardiac muscle, which is inside the silicon body of the device.

“Ultimately, these chips could replace the use of animals to screen drugs for safety and efficacy. Using a well-designed model of a human organ could significantly cut the cost and time of bringing a new drug to market”, said lead researcher and Berkeley bioengineering professor Kevin Healy.

Using animals for testing human heart medication is not just related to ethics. There are many problems associated with this, for example, if a drug has been created to treat humans, its effect will be different on a species, which is biologically different from human beings.

Electrical Stimulation of Vestibular Organs can Help Parkinson’s Patients

Swedish scientists have claimed that Parkinson’s disease patients can seek significant benefits with the help of a wearable device that stimulates the sense of balance with electric noise.

A portable pocket-sized vestibular, portable pocket-sized vestibular, is the new creation of scientists from the University of Gothenburg's Sahlgrenska Academy to improve the lives of Parkinson’s sufferers.

Associate Professor Filip Bergquist, who led the research, said the device was built similar to the TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) therapy, which is used to provide relief from pain like during child birth.

CERN Scientists to Test a New Particle Model

CERN scientists have stated that they want to use the newly-upgraded Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to ‘break’ their robust theories.

The scientists said that they will try to test a new model of particle physics that will be helpful in the explanation of the mysterious dark matter origin, which constitutes over 84% of the total matter in the universe.

Dark matter is one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of the universe. Although the presence of this matter can be inferred from the gravitational pull that it exerts on the visible matter, its detection is impossible as it does not emit or absorb any radiation.
