McNeil pleads guilty in Federal District Court

On Tuesday, Johnson & Johnson subsidiary McNeil-PPC Inc pleaded guilty in Federal District Court in Philadelphia to one count of information charging the company for selling liquid medicine contaminated with metal. According to the United States Department of Justice, the company has agreed to pay about $25 million to resolve the case. Out of $25 million, $20 million will be paid as criminal fine, while $5 million as forfeit.

About four years ago, the company had launched recalls of some medicines, including Infants' Tylenol and Children's Motrin. The medicines were made at the company's Fort Washington plant.

Sugar Industry Shaped Federal Research on Dental Cavities: Study

A latest study, published in journal PLoS Medicine Wednesday issue has revealed that the sugar industry played an active role in shaping the National Institute of Health's efforts to decrease the dental cavities in the 1960s and 1970s.

According to the study, the internal industry documents have revealed that the industry, since 1950, was aware of the fact that sugar caused tooth decay but pushed the government researchers to focus on the prevention strategies other than reducing sugar consumption.

The study said the industry funded the research on enzymes to break up dental plaque and vaccines against tooth decay, in order to divert the attention from the simpler strategy of telling Americans to avoid sugary drinks and snacks.

Heart experts usually recommend people to avoid fatty diet to reduce the risk of heart diseases. However, a new study has revealed that heart health is further exacerbated by stress and depression. Published in the journal Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, the study has claimed that stress and depression have a great potential to cause serious damage to your heart.

The study saw researchers examining 5,000 people with coronary heart disease aged 45 years and older. The researchers collected information from the participants on their symptoms of depression and stress through examinations on questionnaires that were conducted from 2003 and 2007.

Burger King to Remove Fountain Drinks from its Kids’ Menu

Burger King has taken an initiative to improve its offering to children under the Kids' Menu by adding healthy options. The fast food chain has removed fountain drinks from the kids' meals.

In the revised menu, fat-free milk, 100% apple juice and low-fat chocolate milk will be offered. It seems that other fast-food companies are also making similar changes. In January, Wendy's made the same changes.

In 2013, McDonald's removed pop from its Happy Meals. These efforts are being made to control America's obesity problem. With more such changes, it has become difficult for children to get soft drinks at fast-food joints.

According to reports, scientists have identified a new class of drugs that may keep a person young for a longer time. The reports stated that the new drugs dramatically increase healthy lifespan.

The new drugs, Senolytics, could help an individual to achieve vitality even when the person is already old. The class of drugs has been recognized by Scripps Research Institute, nonprofit American medical research facility located in San Diego, California. The research institute has shared the details about the drugs in an official post online.

Vegetarian diet reduces risk of colorectal cancer: Study

A new study by scientists from the Loma Linda University has revealed that vegetarians are at lower risk of developing colorectal cancer than non-vegetarians.

The study claimed that a vegetarian diet offers significant protection against cancers of the colon and rectum, which is the second-leading cause of cancer death in the United States after lung cancer.

The findings emerged from the university's multimillion-dollar Adventist Health Study-2 investigation that links diet to specific forms of cancer.

The study led by Dr. Michael Orlich, a specialist in family and preventative medicine, also claimed that pescovegetarians or vegetarians who eat fish had a 43% lower risk of colon or rectal cancer than non-vegetarians.
