Six Portland Area Robotic Teams progress towards National Championships in St. Louis

Six Portland area robotics teams are ready for national championships in St. Louis after they won their divisions during the weekend's regional competition.

The West Super-Regional Championships took place March 27 to 29 in Oakland, Calif. The winners of the Championships are teams from Washington County 4H, Lake Oswego High School, Westview High School and Stoller Middle School.

CD Venkatesh, coach of Team AOOFA of Washington County, won the Compass Award. This award is provided to a coach in the 12-state western region. Teams from thirteen Oregon middle and high school robotics were among the 72 from a dozen states competing for spots in the FIRST Tech Challenge regional contests.

North American NANOGrav receives $14.5M from NSF

North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) has received $14.5 million over a five-year period from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to operate a Physics Frontiers Center (PFC).

The funding has been granted to create and operate a Physics Frontiers Center, which will radio time observations of pulsars with the Green Bank Telescope and Arecibo Observatory in order to detect and study low-frequency gravitational waves.

Gravitational waves are elusive ripples in the fabric of space-time, which arise from extremely energetic and large-scale cosmic events.

Astronauts Scott Kelly and Mikhail Kornienko to Spend One Year at ISS

A Russian Soyuz rocket lifted from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Friday, carrying a US-Russian crew to the International Space Station (ISS). The crew comprised NASA astronaut Scott Kelly, 51, and cosmonauts Mikhail Kornienko, 54, and Gennady Padalka, 56.

Kelly and Kornienko will spend a year on the orbiting space laboratory, which is double the time astronauts spend at the ISS.

Padalka will return to earth in September and his stay will increase his total number of days being spent at the ISS to 878. The current flight is the fifth for Padalka.

YouTube Tests New 4K at 60 Frames per Second Video Playback

YouTube has been consistently improving its video quality over the last couple of years. And now it has come to notice that the website is experimenting with an unprecedented streaming resolution.

YouTube introduced 60 Frames Per Second video playback few months ago and now the massive video streaming website is testing 4K video at 60 Frames Per Second.

According to TechCrunch, the company has uploaded a series of sample clips to showcase the technology.

One might hear about 4K TVs quite often, but to stream 4K content through normal video streaming websites is still unheard of and what YouTube is offering is more of an experiment.

Researchers produce Bionic Ants and Butterflies on 3D printer

Researchers have come up with the production of bionic ants and butterflies on a 3D printer that looks as beautiful as their natural counterparts.

These bionic ants have not only the physical characteristics of the ants but also a design that keeps many behavioral features of the highly social insects. They are over 5 inches long and weigh just over 1 ounce each.

A small video camera is present in each artificial ant that provides a sense of sight for the robotic insects. These robotic insects can recharge their internal batteries by pacing their antennae against a charging station.
