UN Officials raise Concerns over Food Safety this World Health Day

On the occasion of the World health Day, UN officials raised concerns over challenges of food safety worldwide. The officials said that there is an immense need to make joint efforts by multi-sectors from food production to food supply chain.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said it is very important for people to ask themselves how safe their food is. He said that unsafe food is not properly reported most times. World Health Organization (WHO) has to say that unsafe food is responsible for causing more than 200 diseases, including diarrhea, cancers.

Only a few weight-loss programs work: Researchers

According to research team at Johns Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore, very few weight-loss programs work and people should carefully choose a program to maintain weight in long term. A review of 4,200 studies has been conducted by medical experts in order to find out evidence of the effectiveness of weight-loss programs. It has been found that very few programs out of more than 32 commercial weight loss programs are helpful.

According to Kimberly Gudzune, research lead, "Primary care doctors need to know what programs have rigorous trials showing that they work, but they haven't had much evidence to rely on. Our review should give clinicians a better idea of what programs they might consider for their patients".

FDA accepts Novo Nordisk’s resubmitted Application for Tresiba

Danish multinational pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk announced that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has accepted its application for the company's key insulin drug, Tresiba, based on interim analysis data from a clinical trial. According to reports, the application was resubmitted by the pharmaceutical company headquartered in Bagsvaerd, Denmark.

Novo Nordisk's Tresiba was refused by the federal agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services about two years ago. According to the agency, there are chances that the drug could be associated to higher rate of heart attack or stroke. Novo Nordisk's drug is available outside the United States.

Dietary Supplements could contain Harmful Amphetamine type Substance: Study

A new study has found that many popular diet drugs and sports supplements could have a harmful amphetamine type substance. Currently, the health risks linked with the substance similar to amphetamine are not known as it has not been tested on humans until now. The study has been published in the journal Drug Testing and Analysis.

According to the study, the substance is beta-methylphenylethylamine (BMPEA) and it could be present in diet drugs that advertise Acacia rigidula as an active ingredient. The diet supplements promise to boost energy and help in weight loss. As per reports, Acacia rigidula, which is a shrub type plant, is usually found in Texas. BMPEA can only be made synthetically, the reports further stated.

Employees remove Woman with Cancer from Alaska Airlines flight

A California woman with cancer was asked to go out of an Alaska Airlines flight from Hawaii to California as she didn't have a note from her doctor. Airline employees told her that she could only fly after showing a note from a doctor.

Elizabeth Sedway of Granite Hill, California, is suffering from multiple myeloma. The missed flight means that she wouldn't be able to attend several chemotherapy treatments. She missed the flight from Lihue, Hawaii to San Jose on Monday.

She wrote on her Facebook page that she had to receive chemo sessions, but because of the missed flight she will miss them and she is not alone to suffer from this, but her children too, who will miss school. Her husband will also miss important meetings, she added.

Teen Birth Rate Declines Nationally

On Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released its monthly Vital Signs report. Good news is that teen births have declined.

Since 1991, teen births have declined 57% from nearly 61.8 per 1,000 girls aged 15 to 19 years to 26.5 per 1,000 teen girls in 2013. The report also unveiled that there is l very low rate of the most effective contraceptive use in states like Georgia.

There have been places where cost with regard to extra training has significantly increased at some clinics in Augusta where teen birth rate has dramatically declined in the last five years in Augusta. One of the main reasons of it is it was provided with $7.5 million CDC grant to lower teen pregnancy rates.
