ALMA Captures Image of Gravitationally Lensed Galaxy SDP.81

SDP.81, a galaxy located nearly 12 billion light years from earth, is known as a starburst galaxy. It is known as so because of its unusual high rate of stellar birth producing a lot of light.

The earth-based Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array has found this galaxy to be extra special. The telescope has captured image of the galaxy and is considered to be the most high-resolution image of the galaxy ever produced.

It is because between the galaxy and earth, there is one more galaxy, which is massive enough the bend the light coming from SDP.81. It is magnifying and distorting and line it up in such a matter that the light from the galaxy appears to be in almost perfect circle, which is an effect known as Einstein ring.

Anaesthetic Gases contribute to Climate Change: Study

A new study has found that Anaesthetic gases could be raising earth's temperature. Anaesthetic gases, which help doctors to cause temporary loss of sensation in patients and perform surgery smoothly, have been contributing to climate change.

According to the study, during the last ten years, concentrations of the anaesthetics desflurane, isoflurane and sevoflurane have been rising across the globe. The study detected the compounds as far as Antarctica.

Researchers of the study said that like carbon dioxide, which is responsible for climate change, anaesthesia gases also allow earth's atmosphere to store more energy from the sun, which could contribute to climate change. But unlike CO2, the gases are extra potent in their greenhouse-gas effects, as per the researchers.

Endangered Species Act protections for Northern Spotted Owl could change from threatened to endangered

The US Fish and Wildlife Service has reviewed the protection status of the Northern Spotted Owl and has agreed to consider the need to change Endangered Species Act protections for the owl from threatened to endangered.

In 1990, the owl was first listed as threatened. Since 'Timber Wars' in the Northwest were at the peak, the listing became a key moment in the region's cultural and economic history.

This caused a temporary ban on logging in federal old growth forests and eventually to the Northwest Forest Plan. The plan cut logging on national forests and other federal land by more than 80%.

Montana's Smith River among top 10 most endangered rivers

A proposed copper mine near Montana's Smith River has pushed the river into most endangered rivers list for 2015.

The American Rivers, a conservation group that compiles an annual list of the most endangered rivers found that Smith River is number 4 on the list this year due to a proposed copper mine that could affect the water quality and harm fish. The group has been releasing its endangered river list since 1984.

Canada-based Tintina Resources is opening a copper mine north of White Sulphur Springs in the area of Sheep Creek, major tributary of the Smith.
