Onondaga County Residents receive warning on Lyme disease

The Onondaga County Health Department has said that they have already seen cases of Lyme disease this year, due to which they have been reminding the residents to take precautions before heading outside.

Onondaga Health Department Medical Director Dr. Quoc Nyuien said, "Avoid the tick is the first thing you want to do. So look at the habitat for the ticks and do not venture into it".

The experts said if you or your child has been outdoors, then the best thing you could do is a tick check, by thoroughly examining the entire body.

‘California Initiative to Advance Precision Medicine’ to be launched to Improve Industry

With an aim to improve the industry of precision medicine, California Governor Jerry Brown has announced partnership with the University of California to come up with a local program.

In this program, more partnerships will take place not only at industry level, but also at academic level. Main aim of the California Initiative to Advance Precision Medicine is to find ways to cross-reference patients' medical data with other types of data like mobile, environmental, genomic and socioeconomic.

This will help in improving the understanding of various diseases and development of more accurate and on-point therapies. It is the first initiative in which California's scientists will research and assess the behavior of any disease and also of the healthcare system.

FDA gives nod to Amgen’s Heart-Failure Treatment Corlanor

Amgen's heart-failure treatment Corlanor has got a green signal from the US Food and Drug Administration. The drug was designated for priority review in August.

The drug is believed to have high efficacy of regulating heart rate and reducing the risk of hospitalization for worsening heart failure. The drug is meant for patients with stable, chronic heart failure caused by a poorly-contracting lower-left part of the heart.

The drug is an oral medication and the FDA has approved it as the first new chronic heart-failure medicine in nearly a decade. Each year, an estimated $31 billion comes as cost of heart failure in the US, as per the company. Majority of the cost is associated with hospitalizations.

A device could help reduce pain caused by shot

Each year, many Americans go to a doctor or a local pharmacy to get at least one shot. The number increases in case of growing children as they are vaccinated for many new and very old illnesses. Rice University researchers are making efforts to make the shots less painful.

A team of freshman engineering students at the school have created a device, which causes a quick chemical reaction to cool a patient's skin before receiving a shot. It has been proved that the device can numb a patient's skin within 60 seconds.

Team member Mike Hua, a mechanical engineering major at Rice, said in a press release that their lab device is 3-D-printed and also contains two sealed chambers consisting of the chemical ammonium nitrate and water.

Usage of Opioids during Pregnancy put babies at risk of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome

Use of Opioids medication during the time of pregnancy could put babies at high risk of neonatal abstinence syndrome. As per reports, the neonatal abstinence syndrome is a serious health condition that is linked to use of illegal drugs during pregnancy.

In 2012, about 259 million prescriptions were given for opioid pain relievers in the United States. A new study has revealed that hydrocone and opioid pain relievers are usually prescribed to pregnant women. But the use of the medication could put babies at higher risks of suffering from neonatal abstinence syndrome. The study published in Pediatrics journal was led by scientists from Vanderbilt University, Nashville.

Pfizer’s Breast cancer Drug Ibrance shows Impressive Results

Earlier, Pfizer's breast cancer drug Ibrance's clinical trial was delayed due to some issues based on the independent Data Monitoring Committee's (DMC) assessment. After the issues have been resolved, the clinical trial of the drug were resumed.

Ibrance, also known as palbociclib, is Pfizer's experimental breast cancer drug. It is undergoing phase 3 study called PALOMA-3 trial. The drug has met its primary ends and showed improvements in Progression-Free Survival of PFS, according to reports.
