Mesabi Family YMCA to celebrate Healthy Kids Day

On Saturday, the Mesabi Family YMCA will celebrate Healthy Kids Day. During the event, the youth organization will allow children to play and be creative. In return, the most creative kids will win prizes.

The Mesabi Family YMCA’s annual event is free and open to all children. According to the organization, the event has been scheduled to take place on Saturday from about 11 am to 2 pm. Becky Zubich, CEO of the Mesabi Family YMCA, said that the Healthy Kids Day will be held at YMCAs throughout the United States. The CEO also said that the event is held throughout the country, but it is not a required event.

Cobie Smulders reveals Ovarian Cancer Diagnosis at age 25

In an interview featured on the May 2015 issue of Women's Health, Cobie Smulders revealed that she battled ovarian cancer when she was 25 years old.

She opened up and said that she had tumors on both ovaries, and the cancer had spread into her lymph nodes and surrounding tissues.

She mentioned that in the next couple of years, she underwent many surgeries to remove the cancerous tissue in her body, which then left her with one third of an ovary.

Doctors, who treated Smulders, told her that she would never be able to get pregnant naturally. In fact Smulders has two children with her actor husband Taran Killam.

Air Pollution Can Have Serious Impact on Brain: Study

Exposure to Air pollution in a long term can have detrimental effect on the brain, according to a new study involving MRI scans conducted on 943 healthy adults. The research team used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for study subjects above 60 years of age in New England region and compared their brain structure and size. The study results were compared to pollution levels at the place of residence of the study subjects.

With 2 micrograms per cubic meter higher pollution of fine-particle, the brain volume reduced by 0.32 percent on an average, according to the research team. Car exhaust and other vehicle related pollution is the main cause of fine-particle pollution.

Dramatic Rise in Binge Drinking among Women

The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington has released a study raising concerns about a significant rise in heavy drinking and binge drinking habit in women in many parts of the country.

The researchers said that certain counties in the Pittsburgh area have been witnessing an alarming rise about binge drinking. Joe Cvitkovic, a psychologist and the director of behavioral health care at Jefferson Hospital-Allegheny Health Network, shared that the problem is more in college-age women and young professionals. Some college women are having alcohol in high amount and this habit of them can be attributed to their male counterparts.

Switzerland tops third annual World Happiness index produced by SDSN

According to an annual World Happiness Report released Thursday, Switzerland has the world's happiest people.

The report was produced by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), which measured happiness and well-being levels in 158 countries. After Switzerland Denmark, Norway and Canada followed in the rankings that measured. Most unhappy people lived in Togo, Burundi, Syria, Benin and Rwanda.

Jeffrey Sachs, director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University in New York said, “The aspiration of society is the flourishing of its members. This report gives evidence on how to achieve societal well-being. It's not by money alone, but also by fairness, honesty, trust and good health”.

Research finds improvement in proportion of people surviving years after cancer diagnosis

According to a new study, US cancer survival rates are improving years after a cancer diagnosis.

The researchers analyzed the survival rates of men and women with ages 50 to 64 who were diagnosed with a variety of cancer types in 2005 to 2009.

A research team led by Wei Zheng, the study's senior author from Vanderbilt University in Nashville examined data from a national sample of more than 1 million people.

All these patients were diagnosed with cancer of the colon or rectum, breast, prostate, lung, liver, pancreas or ovary between 1990 and 2010.
