Washington, June 9 : Scientists in the US have come up with a cheap, environmentally friendly way to kill termites and other pests.

In their study, they have found that a substance derived from glucose can weaken the insects'''' immune systems, making them vulnerable to infections from lethal microbes.

According to researchers, the findings could give rise to a whole new class of safer pest-control treatments.

Cairo - Hamas' political leader Khaled Meshaal was in Cairo on Tuesday for talks with Egyptian officials on the chances of resuming Palestinian talks aimed at achieving unity, diplomatic sources told the German Press Agency dpa.

Hamburg  - Motorsport supremo Max Mosley has told Formula One teams to register unconditionally for the 2010 season before possible rule changes can be implemented.

News reports on Tuesday in several countries said that Mosley has written an according letter to eight teams which have registered only provisionally over to a budget cap row with the ruling body FIA.

Melbourne, June 9 : Universities Australia has adopted a ten point action plan for student safety from recommendations developed by the Deputy and Pro Vice-Chancellors (International) from Australian universities, as part of a meeting convened by Universities Australia in Canberra on June 4 and 5. The plan emphasises strong law enforcement plus necessary complementary actions.

London, June 9 : Even though women these days are more likely to go to university, a study led by the Equality and Human Rights Commission in Britain has found that gender attitudes in schools have not changed since the 1960s.

The equalities watchdog says that girls are still far more likely to be encouraged to do hairdressing, catering and childcare courses, while boys go on to do mechanics and plumbing.

Hamburg  - Amid fears that last week's fatal Air France crash may have been caused by faulty air-speed sensors, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) cautioned airline pilots Tuesday that they must rely on other flight data if the devices play up.

The advisory from the agency, which is based in Cologne, Germany, went to all operators of intercontinental flights.
