Berlin - German Vice-Chancellor Frank-Walter Steinmeier congratulated celebrated philosopher Juergen Habermas on his 80th birthday on Thursday, lauding him as the "European voice of reason."

In a letter to the philosopher Steinmeier wrote, "for decades you have determined the debates of our country and of Europe," and thanked him for his critical enlightenment, "in the best traditions of our country."

Islamabad, June 18 : Criticizing the `stringed' US assistance to Pakistan, former Pakistan Information minister, Sherry Rehman, has said that the assistance being offered to Islamabad by Washington was a major factor which comprises the strategic goals of both the countries.

Taipei - Taiwan's immigration police said Thursday they had cracked a human trafficking ring which had sent at least 40 Chinese minors to the United States in the past eight months.

"The crime ring has allegedly trafficked more than 40 mainland [Chinese] children to the US in the past eight months, using the passports of indigenous children in eastern Taiwan," said Chen Chien-cheng, an immigration police spokesman.

Chen said the major suspect, identified by his last name Teng, asked for 60,000 US dollars from Chinese parents who wanted to send their children to the US.
