Drop noticed in Adult Smoking rate in US

A decline has been witnessed in the adult smoking rate in America. A report released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has unveiled that around 17% of American adults have smoked cigarettes in 2014, a drop of around 20% from adult smoking rate in 2005.

Those who continue to smoke, the number of cigarettes smoked daily has declined to 13.8% from 16.7% in 2005. Along with this, the CDC report has unveiled that there are many categories, where it has become quite difficult to bring a cut on smoking habit and especially among the poor.

Planned Parenthood’s presence in Texas has reduced significantly

According to Texas, it has been successfully able rebuild a safety net without Planned Parenthood. But according to independent health experts, the state will take a long time before it can reach a level when Planned Parenthood was a vital part of its family planning efforts.

The government has come up with the new system after four years of cutting funding for Planned Parenthood. The state's retooled family-planning programs are even considered as a model for Republicans in Congress who want to end funding for Planned Parenthood at a national level.

As per the data provided by Texas health officers, the new programs has covered 317,393 women in 2014, which is almost equivalent to 320,044 women covered in 2010 when the funding was not cut from Planned Parenthood.

Obesity Rates in US on rise

For past so many years, public awareness campaigns and other efforts have been done to bring a decline in obesity rates in America. But a new government research paper has shown that despite these efforts, obesity continues to rise among American adults.

As pr a report released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more number of women in comparison to men has become obese. In 2013-14, the obesity rates have increased to around 38% of adults, an uptick from 32% from a decade earlier.

Dr. William Dietz, an obesity expert at George Washington University, said that the report has acted as a bleak truth. It now seems that the situation, which was thought to be getting better, is actually becoming worse.

20 percent of adult New Yorkers suffer from mental health problems

A report released on Thursday has unveiled a star truth about New York City. It has been found that at least one in five adults in New York suffer from mental health problems like depression, substance abuse, suicidal thoughts and other psychological disorders every year.

In order to make things better, New York City's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene will be launching a plan known as NYC Thrive. The plan, which is expected to be released by the end of December, goal will be to prevent and treat psychological disorders in the city having 8.4 million residents.

One of the main aims of the project will be to come up with such a system that is able to track mental health in children and adults.

Researchers at the University of Cambridge conducted a study on cockroaches and concluded that the tiny creatures can boost power to their mandibles, enabling them to chew through tougher materials than would otherwise be likely.

The researchers said gnawing through tough materials is not an issue for those cockroaches who depend on mandible boosters, giving them super-charged chewing powers.

Cockroaches are known for their nearly indestructible nature and capability to thrive in different conditions. The researchers closely studied the cockroaches and noticed that they can combine fast and slow twitch muscle fibers in their jaws.
