Darzalex is first biologic drug and first monoclonal antibody approved for multiple myeloma

On Monday, a Johnson & Johnson drug has won Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for the treatment of the incurable blood cancer multiple myeloma in patients who were not able to succeed in past therapies and are left with a few options only.

Darzalex is the first ever biologic drug and monoclonal antibody that has got approval for multiple myeloma. The National Cancer Institute has estimated that in 2015, the cancer, occurring in infection-fighting white blood cells in the bone marrow will be striking 26,850 Americans and take lives of nearly 11,240 people.

Atlantic Philanthropies giving $177 Grant to Fight Dementia

Private foundation Atlantic Philanthropies is going to give $177 to establish a brain health institute. It will be an effort to stop rising dementia cases across the world. The new institute could be based at the University of California, San Francisco’s Memory and Aging Center and at Trinity College Dublin.

The investment is one of the single largest donations ever by Charles F. Feeney founded Atlantic Philanthropies. Previously, the 84-year-old alumnus of Cornell University gave a grant of about $400 million to UC San Francisco. The grant made him the biggest contributor of the school.

Fox Squirrel no longer endangered

The US Fish and Wildlife Service officials have announced on Friday that they will remove fox squirrel from the list of Threatened and Endangered Wildlife under the Endangered Species Act in December. The squirrels, which live in forest area, have made a great comeback.

A decline came in the population of squirrels owing to forest cutting for the purposes of agriculture and development, over-hunting and short-rotation timber harvest. In 1967, the squirrel was added into the list when a shocking 90% decline came into its population. Its 77 other species were also added in the list.

Six quintillion gallons of groundwater present in upper earth’s crust

More than two billion people in the world are dependent on groundwater from drinking purposes every day. It is even pumped out to grow crops and plays a vital environmental role. Lately, a research has been done to have an idea of how much groundwater is there and what is its age and how long it has been underground.

The research paper published in Nature Geoscience has unveiled that there are six quintillion gallons of groundwater in the upper 1.2 miles of the Earth's crust. Study’s lead researcher Tom Gleeson, a hydrogeologist at the University of Victoria in Canada said, “Our maps and estimates show where the groundwater is quickly being renewed and where it is old and stagnant and non-renewable”.

Paris conference expected to produce agreements on battling climate change

From November 30, the United Nations climate conference will start in Paris. The meeting will be attended by as many as 40,000 officials and heads of different nations. Though our hearts go to what tragic incident has happened in Paris, it is also important to ensure that climate change remains as the global economic agenda for the next 15 years.

Experts said that the Paris meeting would be a conclusion to many such discussions on climate change. It is expected that the conference will result into agreements on battling climate change. In the meeting, one of the aspects, which would be surely discussed, is economic impact of the measures to be taken.

Earlier unknown fourth strand of ancient European ancestry revealed

After carrying out the first sequencing of ancient genomes taken from human remains, which dates back to the Late Upper Palaeolithic period over 13,000 years, the researchers have revealed about the fourth strand of ancient European ancestry, earlier unknown.

The research carried out by international team of researchers has unveiled that the new ancestry has roots back from populations of hunter gatherers, who had split from western hunter-gatherers after expansions. They then moved on to settle in the Caucasus area.
