Astronomers watch a star being swallowed from beginning to end over a period of several months

Black holes are infamous for gulping stars and tearing apart galaxies, but it's not always a fast process. On Thursday, astronomers reported that they have seen a star being swallowed from starting till end over a time span of several months.

They have reported in the journal Science that for the first time ever they have detected a spurt of plasma at the event horizon.

Sjoert van Velzen at Johns Hopkins University and colleagues wrote that their observations have become the first ones to sample the light curve within a month of the peak. In a statement, van Velzen added, “It's the first time we see everything from the stellar destruction followed by the launch of a conical outflow, also called a jet, and we watched it unfold over several months”.

According to a latest research, dangerous weather has resulted into a staggering 90% of major disasters. The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reductions reported that the data has disclosed that 6,457 recorded floods, heat waves, droughts, storms and other weather-related disasters have caused a huge damage to different areas worldwide over the last 20 years.

The United States reported 472 natural disasters and was hit the hardest. It was followed by China, India, the Philippines, and Indonesia. According to the researchers estimations the US spends between $250 billion and $300 billion every year over natural disasters.The first Climate Change Conference was held in 1995 and since then, 606,000 people have lost their lives and 4.1 billion people have been injured.

Increased carbon dioxide level in ocean causes rapid growth of coccolithophores: Study

According to a new study, environmental changes like the riseof carbon dioxide levels in water have resulted into the rapid growth of a microscopic marine alga in North Atlantic. John Hopkins University researchers have discovered that there is a 10 times rise in the number of coccolithophores, single-celled algae and protists that are present in the oceans across the world, from 1965 to 2010.

In the past 50 years, these small calcifying plants that are part of the marine ecosystem foundation have significantly increased from 2% to over 20% in 2010, with spikes noted in the 1990s.

Findings of a new study have shown that people who have higher amounts of fat stored in their body usually face difficulty in losing weight despite numerous efforts. Researchers gave these conclusions after carrying out experiments on lab mice.

During the present study, a group of researchers assessed 643 children from the age group 6-7 years, who were registered in a pediatric primary care clinic in upstate New York.
