Researchers create new phase of solid carbon with qualities previously thought to be impossible

Researchers have come up with a new phase of solid carbon, which has the qualities that were earlier thought to be impossible, and can be used for the creation of diamonds at room temperature and the similar atmospheric pressure as the ambient air.

North Carolina State University scientists have named it Q-carbon, saying that it is different from the other solid forms of carbon, graphite and diamond that are known to us.

NC State’s Jay Narayan, lead author of three papers on the findings, including a paper published recently in Journal of Applied Physics, said that the sole place it could be found in the natural world would be likely in the core of some planets.

New US Asteroid Mining Law Could Violate International Space Treaty

Past week, President Obama signed the US Commercial Space Launch Competitiveness Act, governing ownership of asteroid resources. This could trigger a fresh fight in the commercial space race. The new US Asteroid Mining Law may lead to the violation of International Space Treaty.

Under the section 5103 of the Act, the companies in the US get the right to resources mined from asteroids, though it hasn’t given them rights to the asteroids themselves.

The signing of the act by the president has drawn applause from a five-year-old asteroid mining company Planetary Resources.

The ruling has come as a blow to the project, which was planned for the building of over 20,000 new homes, a commercial district and a number of schools on a nearly 2,500-acre parcel in Santa Clarita. The whole 12,000-acre project is mainly undeveloped open area.

Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin defeats Elon Musk’s SpaceX in Landing of Reusable Rocket

It was SpaceX founder Elon Musk’s plan to land a rocket successfully on earth, but Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin achieved the historic milestone and trumped rival SpaceX. The company’s announcement about landing a rocket successfully on the surface of earth blindsided everyone. The company’s achievement has given a clear message that it is going to be a big player in commercial space race.

Last week, the Jeff Bezos-backed spaceflight company announced it launched a rocket, New Shepard, past the edge of space. According to the company, it was a suborbital test flight. During the flight, the rocket’s crew capsule touched the altitude of 100.5 kilometers before landing back on earth. The greatest thing about the launch was that everything worked as planned by the company.

Black Hole spotted gulping Star, Ejecting Massive Energy

It is extremely rare and surprising to spot a supermassive black hole snacking on a star. An astrophysicist from Curtin University node of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) said the black hole was seen ejecting massive energy after swallowing a star.

The astrophysicist, Dr Gemma Anderson, said watching a black hole gulping stars in which the star is getting ripping apart isn’t an everyday event. When a black hole is forced to consume large amount of gas, plasma-elementary particles’ fast jet in magnetic field runs off from the black hole rim, as per the astrophysicist.
