New Investigation Unveils Story Behind Gilead Sciences Move to Increase Price of a Hepatitis C Drug

According to a Senate Finance Committee investigation report, executives of Gilead Sciences were already aware in 2013 that their plan of increasing the price of a new hepatitis C drug will give rise to public outrage. Despite knowing this fact, the company went forward with the strategy to increase price of the drug, it showed.

Gilead Sciences got federal approval for its drug Sovaldi in late 2013. The company settled the price of $84,000 for a 12-week course of treatment.

According to the internal documents, the company knew that the high price will deliver the right balance: i.e. value to shareholders while also not so high that insurers would ‘hinder patient access to uncomfortable levels’.

No Sign of Cancer Found In Leah, Says Former Cincinnati Bengals Player Devon Still

The former Cincinnati Bengals player Devon Still said his daughter Leah showed no new signs of cancer in her recent medical tests. Devon said he could not ask for a better gift this holiday season.

Devon said he got this great news on Tuesday after the results of the new medical tests were revealed. The 4-year-old Leah was diagnosed with a stage 4 neuroblastoma in June.

As per experts, the disease develops from immature nerve cells that are found in several areas of the body. The disease majorly affects kids that are below the age of five, according to the Mayo clinic.

Leah received treatment that included chemotherapy and surgery. After the treatment, Leah was declared in March to be in remission with no signs of cancer.

France Plans To Spend on Renewable Energy and Environmental Projects in Africa

France on Tuesday pledged that it will be giving African countries more than €2 billion ($2.1 billion) for the development of renewable energy. The funds will be given over the period of next four years, said French President Francois Hollande.

It has been known that Africa produces very less greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, that are produced from burning of fossil fuels. Scientists have linked the emission of greenhouse gases to rapid climate change.

According to scientists, Africa is vulnerable to a changing climate as most of its population is poor, rural and dependent on rain-fed agriculture.

Gov. Jerry Brown Pledges His Support for Climate Change

California Governor Jerry Brown is favoring the goals of US President Barack Obama and it seems that he has found a sweet spot in climate-change communication. Some top masterminds of brown are farming two irreconcilable rhetorical strategies: a fateful doom and gloom, and sunny, pragmatic optimism.

President Obama has departed from the US to attend the summit despite lack of Republican congressional support. President Obama will be standing in support of the emerging multi-national treaty that aims to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.

Gov. Brown’s presence at the Paris climate summit shows that the largest US state will help in limiting the global warming to below two degrees Celsius.

Newly signed Asteroid Mining Law is Controversial

Last week, US President Barack Obama signed a legislation that will legalize commercial asteroid mining. Several critics said the new asteroid mining law may violate international space treaty, but industry officials think the legislation will end a legal quandary that startups were facing from a long time.

The new law, Commercial Space Launch Competitiveness Act, will allow space companies to mine and explore space resources. Those natural space resources will be a subject of exploration of US space companies, but no one can claim ownership of that object.

Bob Richards, chief executive of Moon Express, said it is similar to a fishing vessel in international water. Fishermen can put their nets in water and catch fish, but they cannot own the water area, according to Richards.

Exxon hires High-profile Attorney to Handle NY Climate Change Probe

In an effort to fight New York climate change probe, oil and gas corporation Exxon Mobil Corp has hired a high-profile lawyer. People familiar with the matter said the star attorney’s involvement is an aggressive response by the company to probe into its climate change disclosures.

Exxon Mobil’s new star lawyer is Theodore V. Wells, Jr., a litigation partner at the New York law firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP. The attorney will help the company in fighting the climate change probe. Eric Schneiderman, New York Attorney General, started investing about a year ago whether the Irving headquartered Exxon intentionally hid risks of climate change from its investors.
