Healthy Living and Sport Minister Mary PolakB. C. new legislation prohibits smoking in the presence of children under 16. The new law will come into effect on World Health Day, April 7. The new law will allow police to stop any vehicle on suspicion of smoking in the presence of children and charge $109 fine if found guilty. Anyone refusing to pay fine will not be issued both a driver's licence and insurance. Parents are applauding this effort of government to protect children from danger of second hand smoke.

Cancer rates as well as survival rates are increasing  Recent study revealed that 695,000 living Canadians were diagnosed with an invasive cancer over a 10-year period ending at the beginning of January 2005. The study concluded that although cancer rates are increasing but it is also a fact that survival rates are improving.

Study by Statistics Canada reveled that the most prevalent cancer in women was breast cancer and prostate cancer in men followed by colorectal cancer. 40% cancer cases are due to breast cancer and 38.2% men were diagnosed prostate cancer.

Senior consultant vascular surgeon Dr V Balaji said: "DVT occurs usually in legs without any visible symptoms and is difficult to detect and is not always recognised as having been the cause of death."
