Bhupathi, Paes advance in US Open
Indian tennis players Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes have stormed into the semifinals of the mixed doubles event of the US Open with their respective partners.
Bhupathi and Paes also reached into the quarter-finals of the men's doubles event at the Flushing Meadows in New York on Monday.
The top seeded pair of Bhupathi and his American partner Liezel Huber ousted the eighth seeded duo of Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia and American Bethanie Mattek-Sands in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinal of mixed doubles. Bhuapthi-Huber duo will play against the unseeded American pair of Travis Parrott and Carly Gullickson in the next round.
In another quarterfinal, the second seeded duo of Paes and Cara Black of Zimbabwe fought hard to defeat Swede Robert Lindstedt and Rennae Stubbs of Australia by 7-5, 3-6, 10-6. They will now lock horns with the unseeded pair of Kevin Ullyett of Zimbabwe and Taipei's Su-Wei Hsieh in the semifinal of mixed doubles.
In men's doubles event, Bhupathi and Mark Knowles of the Bahamas outplayed Taipei's Yen-Hsun Lu and Israel's Dudi Sela 6-4, 6-4 while the fourth seeded duo of Paes and the Czech Republic's Lukas Dlouhy raced away with the match against Australian pair of Julian Knowle and Jurgen Melzer 7-5, 6-4.
