Arvind Kejriwal demands action against policemen who arrested girls for Facebook post
Anti-corruption-activist-turned-politician Arvind Kejriwal has demanded the government to dismiss the police officers who arrested two young girls for their Facebook post that questioned the logic behind Maharashtra's shutdown on the day of funeral of Bal Thackeray.
Kejriwal also demanded action against Shiv Sena workers who vandalized the clinic of one of the two arrested girl's uncle.
Demanding action against the policemen and the miscreants, Kejriwal said, "Police officers who arrested the two girls in Mumbai should be immediately dismissed. That's minimum that the govt ought to do."
On Sunday, the twenty-one-year-old woman used social-networking site Facebook to share her views on the shutdown of Mumbai due the funeral of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray. She argued that respect can't be forced, and that Mumbai was shut down because of fear and not because of respect for the demised Thackeray.
The woman's friend "liked" the post, and the Mumbai police arrested the duo at around 10.30 am on Monday. A court ordered them to serve fourteen days in jail. But a few hours later, they were released on bail after they signed bonds of Rs 15,000 each.
But, the police didn't show the promptness they had shown in arresting the two women to arrest Shiv Sena activists who vandalized the orthopaedic clinic that belongs to the uncle of the two girls.
Bal Thackeray's death on Saturday had brought Mumbai to a virtual standstill for the weekend. Shops remained shutting down and taxis off the roads due to fears of violence. However, there was luckily no unpleasant incident in the city over the weekend.
