Adorable Baby Gorilla delivered via Caesarean Section at UK Zoo
A zoo in the UK witnessed the delivery of an adorable baby gorilla via caesarean section. The gorilla took birth on February 12 at Bristol Zoo Gardens after her mother, Kera, displayed signs of a probable serious complication, known as pre-eclampsia, the zoo said.
John Partridge, senior curator of animals, said on the zoo's website that the birth of any gorilla is uncommon and exciting event, but a baby gorilla’s delivery via caesarean section was even more unusual.
Partridge added, “It wasn't a decision that we took lightly -- Kera was becoming quite poorly and we needed to act fast in order to give the best possible treatment to mother and baby, and to avoid the possibility of losing the baby”.
The baby, weighing just over 2 pounds and 10 ounces, hasn’t been named so far. Now, she is doing well after she faced some difficulty in breathing independently, initially. Kera is also under observation of the veterinary team of the zoo.
Besides being the first baby gorilla to be delivered by caesarean at the zoo, it has marked just a handful of times when a gorilla has taken birth by C-section worldwide.
David Cahill, a professor in reproductive medicine and medical education at Bristol University, said that being involved in the care of gorillas over the years, they were called by the zoo to assess Kera’s well-being, as she was in late pregnancy and was showing some signs of being unwell.
Cahill, who is also a gynecologist for humans, has never carried out a gorilla C-section earlier. He said that he and his team have found that the operation was the best choice for delivery.
Cahill added that they also thought that the baby in her uterus was displaying signs of being quite sick and needed to be delivered.
