The presence of 24-hour medical facilities is must in an educational institution which has residential facilities also. However, most institutions including prestigious universities tend to ignore this fact.
The absence of a round-the-clock medical help took life of 23-year-old student at the School of Information Technology in Jawaharlal Nehru University. The boy died due to an asthma attack.
Aishvarya Agarwal was a first year M. Tech. student. He came to university only in August. He was suffering from chronic asthma problem. He was at SIT when he suffered the attack.
He was taken to All-India Institute of Medical Sciences in a make-shift ambulance but he died on the way. There was no provision in the university to tackle such emergencies. A maruti van without any medical equipment served the purpose of ambulance.
The students are a demanding 24x7 emergency facilities, an on-duty doctor at the health centre and well equipped ambulances with on-duty paramedic staff to avoid such fatalities in future.
