Xi elected Chinese presidentBeijing, March 14 - Xi Jinping was Thursday elected president of China and chairman of the country's top military body.

The general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) was picked the chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), reported Xinhua.

The plenary meeting of the first session of the 12th National People's Congress (NPC) elected Zhang Dejiang as chairman of the NPC Standing Committee.

Li Yuanchao was elected vice-president of China.

Li Jianguo, Wang Shengjun, Chen Changzhi, Yan Junqi, Wang Chen, Shen Yueyue, Ji Bingxuan, Zhang Ping, Qiangba Puncog, Arken Imirbaki, Wan Exiang, Zhang Baowen and Chen Zhu were elected vice chairpersons of the NPC Standing Committee.

Wang Chen became secretary-general of the NPC Standing Committee. Also elected were 161 members of the 12th NPC Standing Committee.

NPC deputies adopted a massive cabinet restructuring and streamlining plan which seeks to cut bureaucracy and make the government more efficient. (IANS)
