Heavy rains have hit much of south east Australia this time, as a consequence of which last year's heat wave almost seems like a distant memory now.

However, reportedly, the heat wave that struck in early 2009 caused over 400 deaths in Melbourne and Adelaide.

The report is sending warnings to the government, city planners and health authorities asking them to be better prepared this time for the atrocious summer temperatures.

For most of the South Australians and Victorians the heat wave that struck early in 2009 was indeed extraordinary. People for who going out weren't really that necessary were advised to strictly keep to home.

The extreme heat conditions resulted in significant disruptions, distress and deaths.

The morgues in Melbourne and Adelaide were out of capacity and overflowing due to the rising number of deaths.

In fact, with every year, as compared to the previous January, there were 374 more deaths in Melbourne and 150 more deaths in Adelaide. That makes the total amount to 400 extra deaths in all.

The constant electricity power failures also added to the drastic heat and made the sufferings worse.
