Wanna Join Hate Clubs On Orkut? But, Beware!
Certainly, you can join Hate Communities or Hate Clubs, if you’re really sick of Ekta Kapoor's soap operas, Himesh Reshamiya's nasal voice, SRK’s exaggerated mannerism in social circles, and Big B's smug face. There are the people online, who offer you the places on the World Wide Web for their favorite hate icons and invite users to criticize them freely.
These web spaces are known as Hate communities or hate clubs that are growing extremely popular on social networking Web sites like Google-owned Orkut. These are nice places that offer you to vent your emotions.
On Orkut, the Ekta Kapoor hate club is the leading with a membership of nearly 76,468 and counting, followed by Himesh Reshamiya with 33,137 members, Shah Rukh Khan with 11,179, Greg Chappell with 7,659, yes, Mahatma Gandhi with 6,647, General Musharraf with 1,362, and the Big B with 1,410. Interestingly, such web clubs have often been used by some to settle their personal scores against ex-girlfriends/boyfriends and bosses
Psychiatrist Sameer Parekh reckons that such communities help people validate their pet peeves through other users. “They reinforce your point of view and you join them without giving much thought,” he says.
According to the Psychiatrist, people possess a certain amount of hatred, dislikes, and complexities, and they get a chance to express these on such communities and groups.
However, Parikh says, too much thought should not be dispensed on this entire phenomenon. Serious concerns have been raised over certain communities for hurting social sentiments.
A Google spokesperson told that they take abuse of Orkut very seriously, and are constantly developing new tools to review inappropriate content on the site.
Orkut users too can report content to reviewers by clicking on the 'report as bogus' button. Recently, a priority reporting tool has been introduced for reporting serious aberrations on the site.
“We at Orkut are constantly developing new tools to review inappropriate content on the site. Users can report content to our reviewers by clicking the ‘report as bogus’ button. There are also tools for community owners to delete topics and ban users,” said a Google Spokesperson.
According to Cyber law expert Pavan Duggal, although the owners of such communities can be sued under the offense of defamation, it is difficult as many operate under fake IDs. “Moreover,” Duggal adds, “If one community is blocked others come up in its place.”
However, some member, such as, Gurpreet Singh, Mandip and Manish Sood, do not see any problem in such clubs and communities. Gurpreet said, “I dislike Ekta Kapoor’s serials and I have every right to express it.” Mandip said, "I don't like Mr. Bachchan appearing in every other ad with his funny looking grey french cut beard and black hair; why shouldn't i express it?" “I just can bear Himesh Reshamiya’s nasal voice, what wrong do I do, if I express it,” said Manish.
