United Nations described internet access as a human right

United Nations described internet access as a human rightWorld body, the United Nations today said in a new report that access to internet is basic human right for people around the world.

"Given that the Internet has become an indispensable tool for realizing a range of human rights, combating inequality, and accelerating development and human progress, ensuring universal access to the Internet should be a priority for all states," said the report from Frank La Rue, , a "special rapporteur" for the UN's Human Rights Council.

The report asked countries around the world to avoid or amend any laws that prevent people from accessing the internet. La Rue was also "alarmed" by indications that UK and France will unplug unplugging illegal file sharers.

The report categorizes Internet access as free information flow as well as access to infrastructure. The repot comes after widespread reports about internet being controlled heavily by some states facing revolts in North Africa and the Middle East.
