Twins born to 70-year-old Indian grandmother doing well

Uttat PradeshNew Delhi - Twins born to a 70-year-old grandmother in India's northern Uttar Pradesh state last month are doing well and could be discharged in a day or two, hospital officials said Monday.

Omkari Panwar gave birth to the girl and a boy in Muzaffarnagar, about 160 kilometres north-west of the Indian capital Delhi, on June 24, after undergoing in-vitro fertilization.

The mother and the twins were later transferred to the Sushila Jaswant Rao Hospital in nearby Meerut, where doctors expressed satisfaction at their progress.

Panwar and her husband, Charan Singh, have two adult daughters and six grandchildren.

"We have plenty of agricultural land but we did not have any heir to look after us," Singh said while explaining why the elderly couple went for the treatment.

The couple reportedly spent all their savings and took out a loan to pay for the treatment so that they could have a son. (dpa)
