Tokyo  - Japanese stocks fell in Monday trading due to uncertainty about the US economic recovery and the relatively strong yen.

The Nikkei 225 Stock Average lost 57.38 points, or 0.59 per cent, to close at 9,674.49.

The broader-based Topix index also fell 7.39 points, or 0.84 per cent, to 867.28.

On currency markets at 9 am (0000 GMT), the dollar traded at 89.77-79 yen, up from 89.36-38 yen in late trading Friday.

The euro traded at 1.4644-46 dollars, up from 1.4541-43 dollars, and at 131.47-51 yen, up from 129.94-98 yen. (dpa)
