Theropods had unique serrated teeth
It has been found in a research that Theropods were having distinctive teeth structures that highlighted their predatory dominance. The research, conducted by researchers at the University of Toronto, analyzed the tooth structures of carnivorous dinosaurs.
The study focused on Theropod species, which were the largest land predators to live on the Earth. This group also included Allosaurus, Tyrannosaurus Rex and Coelophysis. The Theropod family lived as top predators for approximately 165 million years.
A scanning electron microscope was used by a team led by paleontologist Dr. Kirstin Brink, from the University of Toronto Mississauga in Canada in order to analyze fragments of fossilized teeth. It has been revealed in the analysis that Theropod species’ internal dental tissues were having an arrangement that led to creation of a unique and serrated structure.
As per reports, this strengthened the teeth, and made them ideal for the "puncture and pull" feeding and improved their capability of gripping, piercing and ripping flesh. According to the study, fossil evidence shows that T.Rex teeth were able to crush bone. In addition to that it also breaks apart prey bone found in fossilized dung of T.Rex.
According to Dr Brink, "What is so fascinating to me is that all animal teeth are made from the same building blocks, but the way the blocks fit together to form the structure of the tooth greatly affects how that animal processes food”. He added that the unseen complexity of the tooth structure in theropods indicates that they were more capable of handling prey than what was thought earlier.
