Tesla Cybertruck emerges as America’s best-selling electric truck in Q2 2024

Making waves in the fast-evolving electric vehicle (EV) market, Tesla’s Cybertruck has emerged as the leading choice among American consumers for electric pickup trucks in the second quarter (Q2) of 2024. According to data published by Kelley Blue Book, there was a notable increase in Tesla Cybertruck sales, which surpassed its closest rival, the Ford F-150 Lightning, in the most recent quarter.

While Tesla hasn’t officially said anything about any surge in sales and deliveries of the Cybertruck, estimates based on a recent recall-related data from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed that the Tesla Cybertruck might have outshined the Ford F-150 Lightning in terms of sales in Q2 2024. Now, Kelley Blue Book quarterly sales report has bolstered that estimate.

According to the estimated stats, based on U.S. vehicle registration data, Tesla sold a total of 8,755 units of the Cybertruck during the April through June quarter, while Ford sold only 7,902 units of the F-150 Lightning pickup truck during the same three-month period. Thus, the Tesla Cybertruck outsold the Ford Lightning pickup truck by nearly 853 units.

As per Cox Auto data, sales of the Ford F-150 Lightning pickup truck increased from 4,466 in Q2 2023 to 7,902 in Q2 2024. On the other hand, sales of the Rivian R1T decreased from 4,424 units to settle at 3,309 units during the same period. GMC Hummer EV (both pickup truck and SUV) jumped from just 47 units to 2,929 units. Change in sales of the Tesla Cybertruck pickup couldn’t be determined as data for Q2 2023 wasn’t available.

Crunching sales data for Tesla EVs isn't straightforward, simply because the world-renowned automaker doesn’t release stats for specific models. Sales stats for the Model 3 electric sedan and Model Y crossover SUV is released combined and rest of the EVs are clustered as “Other Models.” The EV giant neither releases state-by-state vehicle registration data nor breaks the figures by country or region.

The Tesla Cybertruck has firmly established itself as a front runner in the all-electric truck segment, surpassing rivals like the Ford F-150 Lightning in the most recent quarter. Despite various production-related challenges, Tesla’s innovative approach and sturdy consumer demand position the Cybertruck as a key player in shaping the future of electric mobility, potentially paving the way for its continued dominance in the fast-evolving EV market.
