Telecom Operators fight again for Licenses
Telecom Minister Mr. A Raja has informed that government will provide more spectrum by the end of November as many telecom service providers are fighting for licenses. The meeting between Telecom Industry representatives and Telecom Minister ended up in clash between CDMA based and GSM service providers.
This is not the first time telecom companies are fighting for spectrum and licenses. Telecom companies are requesting help from Prime Minister regarding the matter.
Department of Telecom received nearly 300 applications for Unified Licenses till Monday. Existing Telecom companies are looking at expanding their business, while many new companies are trying to enter the market. The spectrum is less and seekers are more. So a clash between providers was eminent.
The Telecom Ministry wanted to change the policies and to make conditions more stringent, while operators are looking to get their share from the fast growing Indian Telecom market. The additional spectrum of 2G services may be auctioned by the government.
The first-come first-served policy for Telecom license may be removed in the current scenario. Many Telecom companies applied for Unified Licenses for all 22 circles. There are many foreign players ready to enter the Indian market.
Among those who met Telecom minister were Telecom giants, Sunil Bharti Mittal of Bharti Airtel and Ashim Ghosh of Vodafone. Many officials of Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) urged the increase in spectrum to accommodate more providers. COAI members also urged that auction of additional spectrum for existing 2G mobile services was against the terms of unified access license.
Telecom Minister informed that the telecom regulatory received 300 applications for licenses and a committee will check the applications in details. The applications meeting stringent conditions will be accepted for further consideration. Only serious companies with good management and strong plans will be allowed to enter the fast growing Indian Telecom Sector.
