In the month of June, the tea exports have gone down by 15 per cent to end at 12.7 million per kg. This has been the outcome of the fall of production both in northern as well as southern India.

As per the data given by the Kolkata-based Tea Board, India managed to export 14.9 million kg of tea during the same period last year.

Most hitting was the fall in the contribution of Northern India that saw the export basket fall down to 4.9 million kg as against 6.6 million kg during the same month last year. South India slipped from 8.3 million kg last year to end at 7.8 million this year.

The massive fall in export is the outcome of the fall in production in Assam which is the largest tea producing state in India. The North-Eastern state contributes more than 50 per cent of the total tea produced in India.

Heavy rainfall in the region due to monsoon is said to be the reason for the fall. Also there was a pest attack in the month of February.
