Amnesty International criticizes India's new anti-terrorism laws

Amnesty International LogoNew Delhi - Human rights group Amnesty International Friday criticized India's proposed anti-terror laws saying they violate international human rights treaties.

The new legislation has been approved by the Indian Parliament and now requires President Pratibha Patil's approval before becoming law.

The Indian government had rushed the proposed National Investigating Agency Bill and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Bill through parliament after the terrorist attacks on Mumbai in November left more than 170 dead.

Uphaar tragedy: High Court upholds conviction of Ansal brothers

Delhi High CourtNew Delhi, Dec 19 : The Delhi High Court today upheld a trial court''s order convicting Sushil and Gopal Ansal in connection with the 1997 Uphaar cinema hall fire tragedy.

However, the High Court reduced the jail term of Ansal brothers, who own the cinema hall, from two to one year.

Justice S Ravinder Bhat who pronounced the verdict rejected the plea of the Association of Victims of Uphaar Tragedy (AVUT) to enhance the jail term awarded to the Ansal brothers and other convicts.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had refused to review an application filed by the Ansal brothers seeking review of their bail cancellation.

Developing countries to deal with challenges on their own: PM

Hindu groups' shutdown at Christmas in India's Orissa draws concern

The state has seen widespread anti-Christian violence since August that was triggered by the killing of Hindu leader Laxmananda Saraswati, who led a campaign against conversion to Christianity in the region.

The `Pirates of The Caribbean' actor asked the shop staff to close the shop to the common public, so that he can comfortably buy an engagement ring for partner Vanessa Paradis.

"This was Johnny''s third or fourth visit to the store," a source told OK! Magazine.
