They have stepped up efforts to rescue hundreds of thousands of people marooned by floods.

Addressing a news conference in New Delhi Air Commodore G. S. Cheema, Principal Director of Transport and Helicopter Operations said the Air Force is involved in lifting boats carrying marooned villagers from remote areas.

SC notice to Narendra Modi in fake encounter caseNew Delhi, Sep 3 : The Supreme Court has issued notices to Gujarat Government and Chief Minister Narender Modi on a petition seeking CBI inquiry into an alleged fake encounter in which a youth was killed in 2004.

The petition filed by Kerala-based M R Gopinath Pillai alleged that his son Pranesh Kumar Pillai alias Javed Shaikh was gunned down by the Gujarat police for having links with terrorist groups but even four years after the incident there was no evidence to the effect.

Assistance of Army engineers, BRO offered to repair Bheem barrage on KosiNew Delhi, Sep 3 : The Centre has assured all possible assistance to the Bihar government in the wake of the ongoing flood relief and rescue operations and a high level Central team has offered the help of Army engineers and the Border Roads Organisation for repair of the Bheem barrage on river Kosi where the breach took place.

A high-level team of the officials from the Centre lead by Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekhar met the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and senior state officials in Patna on Tuesday.

BMW hit-and-run case sentencing deferred to Sept 5

RK Anand, IU Khan held guilty in BMW sting expose caseNew Delhi, Sept 3 : A Delhi court has deferred till September 5 the sentencing of convict Sanjeev Nanda, the prime accused in the 1999 BMW hit-and-run case.

On Tuesday, Nanda and three others were found guilty of killing six persons, including three constables.

Nanda was found guilty under the Section 304 (2) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), dealing with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The law prescribes ten years imprisonment in such instances.

India's flood-hit Bihar grapples with epidemic fears

Bihar floods: Kosi breaches Jankinagar canal in PurniaNew Delhi  - As flood waters receded in India's eastern state of Bihar, authorities and the military Wednesday faced the challenge of warding off mass epidemics in inundated areas and relief camps, news reports and officials said.

More than 115 people have died in the state since the Kosi river breached an embankment in neighbouring Nepal and submerged large areas in Bihar on August 18, news outlets reported. The state disaster control organization however confirmed only 63 deaths.
