A police spokesman told the IANS news agency that the encounter between a joint police team and paramilitary and a group of militants belonging to the outlawed People's United Liberation Front (PULF) took place on the outskirts of the state capital Imphal.

 Srikrishna Report forwarded to Madras HCNew Delhi, Mar 6 : The Supreme Court on Friday referred the report of Justice B. N. Srikrishna on the clash between lawyers and police, to the Madras High Court.

The report will decide whether there is a need for holding a judicial inquiry into the incident.

A bench headed by Chief Justice K. G. Balakrishnan said the High Court has to determine the need for a judicial inquiry under the Commission of Inquiry Act.

"I do not want to use any harsh words, but the alliance is broken. The obituary of the alliance was written the day Congress had announced its list of 24 candidates in Uttar Pradesh. We cannot offer more than 17 seats to the Congress," Amar Singh told reporters here.
