Now, a low-cost strategy to curb computer worms

Washington, January 14 : Researchers at University of California, Davis and Intel Corporation have devised a new strategy to enable computer network administrators to curb attacks by computer worms at low cost.

Many computers are already equipped with software that can detect when another computer is attempting to attack it.

However, research leader Senthil Cheetancheri says that the software usually fail to identify newly-minted worms that do not share features with earlier marauders.

He even highlights the fact that network managers face a major dilemma when they detect any suspicious activity.

No link between mobile phone use and melanoma of the eye

Washington, Jan 14 : Mobile phone use is not linked to the risk of melanoma of the eye, according to a new study.

Although there is no direct association between exposure to radio waves and DNA damage, which can lead to cancer, previous studies have examined the possibility of a link between cell phone use and melanoma of the eye, also called uveal melanoma.

For the study, Andreas Stang, M. D., of the Martin-Luther-University of Halle-Wittenberg in Germany, and colleagues examined the association between phone use and risk of uveal melanoma in 459 patients and 1,194 control subjects.

Control subjects were drawn from the general population, from ophthalmology clinics, and from siblings of the patients.

Pak urges US for early supply of F-16’s to meet defence requirements

Islamabad, Jan. 14 : Sensing the need of strengthening its air defence amidst high tension, and rising war fears with India, Pakistan has asked the United States for an early delivery of F-16 fighter jets.

Pakistan Defence Minister Ahmad Mukhtar has urged the United States to help Pakistan meet its security requirements, including the provision of F-16 aircraft, The Daily Times reported.

Mukhtar met US Ambassador to Pakistan, Anne W Patterson, and informed her about Pak's military requirements.

"The Minister informed the US envoy about the defence requirements of Pakistan particularly the provision of F-16 aircraft," a statement issued by the Pakistan Defence Ministry said.

According to the Jerusalem Post, the US State Department and White House spokesmen said that Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert''s claim that he had essentially gotten US President George W. Bush to twist Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice''s arm and abstain on the measure was simply untrue.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said Olmert''s story of what happened in his conversation with Bush was "just 100 percent, totally, completely not true," while White House deputy press secretary Tony Fratto said: "There are inaccuracies."

According to the Daily Times, the invitations issued by the US Secretary of State have names of foreign ambassadors and their wives only, as guests for the ceremony in Washington DC on January 20.
