Tata Teleservices to spend $ 2 billion

Tata Teleservices to spend $ 2 billion Tata Teleservices, a Tata group company running its telecom services under the brand name Tata Indicom, has announced that it would invest US$ 2 billion (over Rs 8,000 crore) for setting up nationwide Global System for Mobile (GSM) network in the country. The company, which currently offers mobile services on CDMA platform, is planning to launch the service by the end of current fiscal, but is concerned about the slow pace of spectrum allocation by the government. Till date, the company has received spectrum in five circles even though it had applied for a pan-India allocation. Besides, the company plans to expand in the value-added services (VAS) space with the rollout of 3G services in the country next year. The VAS segment contributes about 12 percent of the revenue in the mobile vertical of the company. Recently, Tata Indicom has emerged as No. 1 in the Congestion data report of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for January, February and March 2008.
