Tata Power commissions 5th unit of Mundra UMPP
Tata Power-arm Coastal Gujarat Power Limited (CGPL) on Monday commissioned the fifth and last 800MW unit of the ultra mega power plant at Mundra in Gujarat.
The first unit of the 4,000MW plant was commissioned in March last year. The project, which is India's maiden ultra mega power project (UMPP), has been completed in a record time of one year.
Developed through wholly-owned subsidiary CGPL, the project has pushed Tata Power's total power generation capacity to 8,500MW. The commission of all the units of the plant has reinforced Tata Power's position as the biggest integrated power company of the country.
Announcing the commissioning of the fifth unit of the project, Tata Power MD Anil Sardana said, "This is the first of the UMPPs that heralds the entry of 800mw supercritical boiler technology in India, which is environment-friendly and efficient."
He added that the technology used in the plant would help save fuel and cut down greenhouse gas emissions, while also providing the country with more power.
For distribution of power, CGPL has penned down a power purchase agreement (PPA) with a total of seven distribution licensees from five states, viz. Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana.
