Spain offers to help Obama in closing Guantanamo

Spain offers to help Obama in closing Guantanamo Madrid - Spain on Wednesday offered to help US President Barack Obama in closing the prison camp in Guantanamo, Cuba.

Spain would, however, first want to be informed in detail about the legal situation of each of the Guantanamo inmates, Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos told Punto Radio.

Moratinos congratulated Obama for having suspended prosecutions at Guantanamo for 120 days immediately after being sworn in on Tuesday.

Spain would want to be informed about the legal situation and the "origin of the detention" of the prisoners in order to "assume its responsibility" within the international judicial framework, the minister explained.

With Obama now in power, Spain is expecting to improve its relations with the United States, which deteriorated after Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero recalled Spanish troops from Iraq immediately after taking office in 2004. (dpa)
