Sensex Opens Strong On Positive CuesIndian stocks opened the day positively above 9,000 mark despite mixed global cues.

There are expectations that the index may see volatility in today’s session ahead of January F&O series expiry on Thursday.

Auto, banking and auto stocks gained the most.

Asian stocks opened on a mixed note as record quarterly loss at Nomura Holdings and profit estimates from Westfield Group and Boral renewed worry that the worldwide recession is rubbing out business earnings growth.

The Midcap barometer has moved up by 0.64%, while the Smallcap index has come up by 0.59%.

The 30-share index, BSE Sensex, today (January 28), belled the session after making a gain of 73.57 points at 9,077.65, as against its last closure in which it surged 329.73 points.

At 10:09 a.m., Sensex was trading up by 75.87 points at 9,079.95 after hitting a high of 9,092.37 and a low of 9,069.57.

In the meantime, the broad based Nifty stood at 2,803.50, up 32.15 points, after touching a high of 2,804.55 and a low of 2,765.60.

Overall market breadth was positive as 1,217 recorded gains, 1,168 posted losses whereas 100 remained unchanged.

The biggest gainers in the 30-share index included Tata Motors (4.92%), Wipro (2.54%), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (2.18%), Grasim Industries (1.91%), Jaiprakash Associates (1.85%) and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (1.75%).

In contrast, Reliance Communications (2.21%), Tata Steel (1.65%), Bharti Airtel (1.38%), and Sterlite Industries (India) (0.86%) were the major losers in the Sensex.

Mr. P. K. Agarwal, president - Research, Bonanza Portfolio stated that stock markets on Tuesday begun the day positively tracking strong global cues. Nifty traded up. But, some profit booking was witnessed after the central bank declarations of keeping rates unaltered during the noon.

He said, “On the same day, Nifty went to high of 2,777 and closed near the high at 2,771. Good buying was seen in Banking, Capital Goods etc. Sterlite, Reliance Infra, Zee, R-Com were among heavy weight gainers. Weakness was seen in GAIL, ONGC, Suzlon etc.”

He added that Nifty is seen range bound between 2,650-2,850 ahead of January series expiry.
